FORT ATKINSON -- James R. "Ziggy" Zieglemeier Sr., age 61, of Fort Atkinson, passed away Tues., Feb. 18, 2003, at Hess Hospital in Mauston. Ziggy was born on March 13, 1941, son of the late Frank and Anna Michel. He married the former Doris Liptow on June 23, 1962, in Whitewater. A resident of the Whitewater and Fort Atkinson area most of his life, Ziggy had worked at Pafflins for many years then at Smith Motors until 1988. Most recently Ziggy owned Ziggy's Golf Cart Repair and Jim's Popcorn Wagon. He had also worked part-time at UW-Whitewater. Jimmy joined the Fort Atkinson Lions Club in 1975, was director from 1979 to 1981, club-bowling chairman since 1985, Lions stockcar racing chairman from 1991-1994, and served on the fund raising committee from 1994-1995.

Jim was a very dedicated Lion and sincere in his efforts to participate, and did more than his share of volunteering. There was no task or problem that he couldn't complete or resolve. The club bowling team was his passion. He attended every Lions district 27 A1 and state bowling tournament since 1985. He was general chairman of the district tournament in 2000 and was in the process of campaigning to have Fort Atkinson host the 2005 State Lions Tournament. Jim never missed a district or state Lions convention. Helping with the Fort Atkinson float was always a priority. Lions that bowled, worked and attended conventions knew him as a fun-loving and dedicated friend and fellow Lion. His Lions pin collection rivals the biggest collection of club pins in the world. He had a passion for collecting pins and making friends wherever he was. His dedication to Lionism was recognized in 2001 when the Fort Atkinson club presented the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award to him. This award recognizes deep commitment to and the practical application of the ideals of Lionism. Jim was totally committed to being a great Lion, and his mission was accomplished.

Surviving are his wife, Doris; 4 children: William and friend Tom of Sparta, James (Jill) Jr. of Rockwood, PA, Michael and friend Terri of Edgerton, and Mary and Mike Mastrogeovani of Palmyra; 6 grandchildren: Justin, Brandon, Kayla, Alicia, Nick and Erica; and brothers, Steven (Barb) Michel of Richland Center and Mitch Stevenson of Reedsburg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sat., Feb. 22, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. William Nolan officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Janesville. Friends and family may call to pay their respects on Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Dunlap Memorial Home, 604 S. Main St., Fort Atkinson, WI, (920) 563-2575.
