Gilbert "Gibby" Disch Jr., age 69, of Monticello, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital.

Gilbert was born on October 26, 1936 in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of Gilbert and Rose (Bigler) Disch Sr. He attended Oak Shade Rural School and married Karen Johnson on April 4, 1959 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 16, 1959 serving 18 months in Hawaii before his honorable discharge on Jan. 31, 1962.

Gibby worked for Roy's Dairy before returning to work with his father on the home farm in Mount Pleasant Township.

He also established Disch Excavating and worked for Wingra Stone of Madison for several years.

He was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello. Gibby enjoyed shaking dice, playing cards, deer hunting, ice fishing, telling stories at Donna's Place, and was a very friendly face at the Dubuque Casino.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren as well as the day care kids.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Disch of Monticello; ten children, Cherri (Mike) Kempfer of New Glarus, Mike Disch, Tammy (Bob) Kammes, Jeff (Sharon) Disch, Brenda (Paul) Eichelkraut, all of Monticello, Renee (Brett) Eichelkraut of New Glarus, David (Jennifer) Disch of Monroe, Angie (John) Blum, Travis (Donna) Disch, and Ryan (Courtney) Disch, all of Monticello; 24 grandchildren; and a sister, LaVonne (Roger) Schneeberger of Oregon, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Daniel in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 20, 2006, at 11:00 a.m., at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. Friends may call at the church on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A memorial fund will be established in his name. The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.
