JANESVILLE -- Vernon R. Schmuck, Sr., age 65, of 5637 Co. Road J, Janesville, died Tues., Aug. 31, 1999, in the University Hospital. Vern was born in Clinton, WI, April 7, 1934, the son of Fredrick and Dorothy (Meyer) Schmuck. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1952. He married Shirley Salisbury Jan. 28, 1960, in Rockford, IL; she died March 16, 1998. He was a lifelong Clinton resident and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a gifted mechanic and owned and operated Vern's Automotive for 30 years. He had designed, built and raced supermodified stock cars, and was a member of the Spring Car Hall of Fame. He was an avid collector of Minneapolis Moline antique tractors and an avid motorcyclist who enjoyed riding his Goldwing so much he made a trip to Alaska on it. He was president of the Clinton Cemetery Association, a member of the Rock River Thresheree Association and a lifetime charter member of the South East Wisconsin Antique Power and Collectible Society. He was a lifelong member of the Harvard Moose Club. Vern had a great sense of humor, and he dearly loved his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by 4 sons: Robert (Linda) Doubleday of Stewart, MN, Edgar Doubleday of Janesville, Vernon (Pauline) Schmuck Jr. of Afton, WI, and William Schmuck of Janesville; 3 daughters: Patricia (Warren) Beckes and Susan Schmuck (Don Lind), both of Clinton, and Julie Owen (J. C. Blake) of Sycamore, IL; his fiancee Janat Williams of Clinton; 9 grandchildren: Ben, Dan, Justin, Tim, Rachel, Amanda, Sara, Ashley and Jessica; a brother, Robert (Brenda) Schmuck of Glendale, AZ; nieces, nephews, many special brothers and sisters-in-law; many friends; and a special group of roundtable friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents; a son, Paul Doubleday; and a brother, Fredrick Schmuck.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sat., Sept. 4, 1999, at First Presbyterian Church, Clinton, with Rev. Kathy Sims Collier officiating. Burial with military honors by Dary Paulsen Post 440 American Legion will be in the Clinton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. Friday at the Schoenfeld Funeral Home, Clinton. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or the Clinton EMS.
