Alan Grant Smith (1938-2009) Member #347 Rock River Thresheree Class of 1998 Alan Grant Smith, 71, a lifelong resident of the Wauconda area, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at his home in Island Lake, IL, surrounded by his family. Alan is loving father of Arlene (Matt) Orlando and Krell (John) Finn; cherished grandfather of Benjamin and Barbara Becker and Sequoia Finn, dear brother of Caroline (Marion) Burmingham, Paul and the late Rosemary; and several nieces and nephews. Alan was born on March 29, 1938, in Evanston, IL to the late Arthur G. and Rosalind (nee Wheeler) Smith. He attended school in Wauconda and grew up on the family farms in Wauconda and Capron, IL. Alan was the owner-operator of Alan Smith Excavating and Trucking, Inc. in Wauconda for over 50 years. His scope of work included services to many of the Chicagoland homebuilders and general contractors. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 since 1963. Alan had a passion for antique farm and construction equipment and owned an extensive collection. He was the Vice President of the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club, President of Chapter #4 Midwest Smaller Crawlers, and Director of the Historical Construction Club. He traveled across the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe in pursuit of this passion. His equipment was often displayed at various shows and venues throughout the Midwest. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 7, 2009, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Kisselburg-Wauconda Funeral Home, 235 N. Main St., Wauconda, IL. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Windridge Memorial Park, Cary, IL.
